Whatever happened to the Ohio State Science Standard?

The whole nation heard about the vote to abandon the Ohio science standard and model lesson plan. The media frenzy spun out hundreds of articles likening this debate to the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925. Then, within a few days, the whole issue disappeared. The Ohio School Board held a meeting one-month after the controversial vote. The actual resolution required a further discussion of the state standards with the expectation that the Board would create language to replace the rejected standard. A committee took up the assignment to create new language. The notes below record an approximate summary of the committee discussion at the March meeting.

This summary indicates what was obvious to those actually observing the Board's actions. The February vote decimated several years of honest intellectual debate over the state standards. The Board was manipulated by a radical left-wing political agenda and forced to abandon the integrity of a well-constructed public policy. The result of yielding to the intimidation of these radicals has left the State Board with no momentum to go forward. Ironically, over 70% of the people of Ohio and 80% nationwide disagree with the radical left agenda of teaching evolution only in public schools. But the intimidation of the left continues to control public policy in the Ohio School Board and renders the Board incapable of representing the wishes of the people.

A final note—one Board member claims the "playing field" has been altered in Ohio due to a decision of a federal judge in the Dover, Pennsylvania case. This point is a perfect example of the distortions in this debate. Ohio and Pennsylvania are in different federal court districts. A federal judge in Pennsylvania has no control over Ohio public policy. Furthermore there are no similarities between the Dover decision and the Ohio state science standards. Even worse, the State Board refused to permit a vote to obtain a legal opinion on the standard and lesson plan from the Ohio Attorney General. They voted instead to remove them both, without a legal review.

The truth is—the truth doesn't matter to a few people in this debate. The evolution-only crowd has only one objective: propagate a single point of view even at the cost of destroying the civil liberties of children in a classroom, an elected Board, or the people of Ohio.
