Here's to Ohio Roundtable president David Zanotti and Ohio church leaders who jointly are challenging on constitutional grounds the state's plans to enter a multistate lottery game. We, too, are opposed to the expansion of the lottery, and to the lottery in general, which is why we're also pleased that Mr. Zanotti's group is planning an ad campaign that would be part of a broader push to convince Ohioans to dismantle the state Lottery Commission altogether.
The addictive nature of nearly 30 years of lottery play in Ohio likely will make it tough to persuade people to dump these games of chance. However, we also believe sentiment is rising against the lottery as more Ohioans understand it's nothing more than a regressive tax that holds out the false hope of riches for individuals who least can afford to throw their disposable income away. We encourage the Ohio Roundtable to press on.
