“God who gave us life
gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be
thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a
conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties
are of the Gift of God?” Thomas Jefferson 1781
Is the sun rising
or setting on America?
That was the question Benjamin Franklin faced in 1787 in the
midst of the debate during Constitutional Convention. After
the signing of the Constitution a woman of Philadelphia
confronted Franklin, asking him what type of government he
and his colleagues had given America. “A Republic, Madame,
if you can keep it.”
As Americans face
the 21st Century the question is simply this: Can we keep
America alive – as it was intended to be? How can Americans
accomplish such a mission if the core ideas that define
America are lost from the culture?
In the Founding
era, men like Sam Adams understood the times. He had no
massive wealth or influence to bring to the table. He was
the owner of a failed brewery and a part-time tax collector.
He knew the time for Independence had come and spent his
life working to bring the principles of Liberty to Boston,
the Northeast, and the American colonies. Adams was a
prolific columnist, legislator, and activist. He created
media opportunities everywhere he went. He birthed the
Committees of Correspondence that united the colonies. He
was the father of the Sons of Liberty and the chief
conspirator in the Boston Tea Party. He was never elected
President but every President owed their office to the ideas
Sam Adams brought to the marketplace, the pulpit, and the
public square.

A positive
alternative – on The Public Square.
In 1980 the
American Policy Roundtable was founded dedicated to
restoring Judeo-Christian principles to American public
policy. In 1989 the Roundtable began a daily Christian talk
radio show
titled, The Public Square. The mission was clear:
- Meet with
Americans every day to retell the story of Liberty.
- Challenge
citizens to rediscover America, and
- Encourage
responsible citizenship by focusing on positive
alternatives in public policy.
Over the past
seventeen years this daily broadcast has grown in market
reach and influence. The Public Square, in its current
two-minute news/commentary format, is now heard over 7000
times per year in eight states. Much has been accomplished
in this daily two-minute program but millions more need to
be reached.
The Next
Steps Forward: TPS30 and TPS60
For years
listeners, station managers and career radio veterans have
urged the Roundtable to create a “long format” version of
The Public Square, an online Christian talk radio program. As an organization living in the trenches
of American politics for almost 30 years, the Roundtable is
uniquely suited to host such a Christian talk radio show. In response to
this market opportunity the Roundtable began production of a
30 minute daily and 55 minute weekend programming schedule.
The Public Square
30 and 55 minute broadcasts bring a unique perspective to
radio programming. The content of these broadcasts is shaped
from the real-life experiences on the mission field of
public policy. From distributing yard signs and walking
neighborhoods to the front row at the US Supreme Court, the
Roundtable has participated in public policy at every level
of government.
The new 30 minute
daily broadcast goes beyond opinion and entertainment, the
hallmarks of standard conservative streaming talk radio. The Public Square is a
daily conversation on how to walk out a Biblical worldview
in the field of public policy. The program is a “team
broadcast” co-anchored by David Zanotti, President and CEO
of the American Policy Roundtable and Wayne Shepherd, career
radio veteran and long-time host of Moody Broadcasting’s
“Open Line”. Additional team members include:
- historian and
Pastor Dr. Jeff Sanders,
- Melanie
Elsey, veteran Legislative Director, the American Policy
Roundtable and
- Dr. Charles
McGowen, retired Air Force Flight Surgeon, Medical
Professor, and author.
Any subject of the
daily news is fair game on The Public Square but the program
does much more than talk about the news or venture opinions.
The broadcast uncovers the historic principles at play in
critical issues and provide listeners positive opportunities
to get involved and make a difference. All of this is done
from a platform of non-partisanship and independence from
any political party or candidate.
The Public Square
is a content rich, daily conversation that stands in the
historic stream of the Lordship of Jesus Christ over all
areas of life. It is an interactive model supported by the
nearly 30 years of resources of the American Policy
Roundtable including several of the most visited public
policy websites in the nation. It is the next step in
digital communications – moving from talk radio to walk
radio.©
